Why Linking Words Matter
Linking words (also called connectors or cohesive devices) are essential for IELTS Writing. They connect your ideas, show relationships between sentences, and make your writing flow naturally.
The examiner specifically looks for "a variety of cohesive devices" in the band descriptors. Using linking words well can push you from Band 6 to Band 7.
Adding Information
- Furthermore — "The pollution is harmful. Furthermore, it affects public health."
- Moreover — "The policy is effective. Moreover, it is cost-efficient."
- In addition — "The course is affordable. In addition, it offers flexible timings."
- Additionally — "The school has good facilities. Additionally, the teachers are experienced."
Showing Contrast
- However — "The plan has advantages. However, there are also drawbacks."
- On the other hand — "Some prefer cities. On the other hand, others prefer rural areas."
- Nevertheless — "The results were unexpected. Nevertheless, the study was valuable."
- In contrast — "Country A improved. In contrast, Country B declined."
- Whereas — "He prefers tea, whereas she prefers coffee."
Giving Examples
- For instance — "Many countries have adopted this policy. For instance, Germany and France..."
- For example — "Technology has transformed education. For example, online learning..."
- To illustrate — "Global warming is accelerating. To illustrate, average temperatures..."
- Such as — "There are many benefits, such as improved health and productivity."
Showing Cause and Effect
- Consequently — "The policy was implemented. Consequently, unemployment fell."
- As a result — "Taxes were increased. As a result, consumer spending declined."
- Therefore — "The evidence is clear. Therefore, action must be taken."
- Due to — "Due to the pandemic, many businesses closed."
Showing Sequence
- Firstly — "Firstly, education is important for economic growth."
- Secondly — "Secondly, it promotes social equality."
- Finally — "Finally, we must consider the environmental impact."
Common Mistakes
- Overusing linking words — Don't start every sentence with one
- Using them incorrectly — "However" shows contrast, not addition
- Using the same word repeatedly — Vary your connectors
- Forcing them in — Only use when there's a real relationship
How Many to Use
Aim for 1-2 linking words per paragraph. That's 4-8 total per essay. This shows variety without overdoing it.
Practice
Write a paragraph without any linking words. Then rewrite it with linking words. Notice how much smoother it reads. Do this daily for 2 weeks.
