IELTS Writing Task 1 — How to Write a Perfect Overview Paragraph

Why the Overview Paragraph Matters

The overview paragraph is the most important part of your IELTS Writing Task 1 response. Many students skip it or write something weak — and that costs them a full band score.

Without a clear overview, you cannot score above Band 6. With a strong overview, you immediately move toward Band 7+.

What Is an Overview?

An overview is a 2-3 sentence summary of the main trends or features in the chart, graph, or diagram. It goes right after your introduction.

Structure of Task 1:

  • Introduction (1 sentence — paraphrase the question)

  • Overview (2 sentences — main trends)

  • Body Paragraph 1 (specific data)

  • Body Paragraph 2 (remaining data)
  • How to Write a Strong Overview

Formula: Start with "Overall," then describe:

  • The highest/lowest values

  • The biggest increase/decrease

  • The general direction or trend
  • Example (Line Graph — Population Growth):

Weak overview: "The graph shows population growth from 1950 to 2000."
(This just repeats the question — no marks!)

Strong overview: "Overall, the population of City A increased significantly over the 50-year period, with the most rapid growth occurring between 1970 and 1990."
(This tells the examiner the main trend — full marks!)

Example (Bar Chart — Sales Data):

Weak: "The chart shows sales of different products."
Strong: "Overall, Product A had the highest sales throughout the period, while Product C consistently had the lowest. All products showed an upward trend from 2015 to 2020."

What NOT to Include in Your Overview
