IELTS Writing Task 1 — How to Describe a Process Diagram

What Is a Process Diagram?

Process diagrams show steps in a process — how something is manufactured, how something works, or how something happens in nature.

Common types:

  • Manufacturing process (how a product is made)

  • Natural process (how chocolate is produced from cocoa beans)

  • Service process (how to apply for a visa)
  • Key Difference from Graphs

Process diagrams don't show data or trends. Instead, you describe:

  • What happens at each step

  • The order of steps

  • Materials used

  • What the final product is
  • Structure

    Step 1: Introduction (1 sentence)

"The diagram illustrates the process of converting solar energy into electricity."

    Step 2: Overview (1-2 sentences)

"The process consists of six main stages, beginning with the collection of sunlight and ending with the distribution of electricity to homes."

    Step 3: Body Paragraph 1 (5-7 sentences)

Describe the first half of the process.

    Step 4: Body Paragraph 2 (5-7 sentences)

Describe the second half of the process.

    Process Language You Must Know

    Sequencing:

  • "First" / "Initially" / "In the first stage"

  • "Then" / "Next" / "Following this"

  • "After that" / "Subsequently" / "In the next step"

  • "Finally" / "In the final stage" / "The last step"
  • Actions:

  • "is collected" / "is processed" / "is heated"

  • "is mixed with" / "is converted into"

  • "flows into" / "is transported to"
  • Materials:

  • "raw materials" / "ingredients" / "components"

  • "the resulting product" / "the finished goods"
  • Example: How Chocolate Is Made

Introduction: "The diagram shows the stages involved in producing chocolate from cocoa beans."

Overview: "The process consists of seven main stages, from harvesting the raw cocoa beans to packaging the final chocolate product."

Body 1: "Initially, cocoa beans are harvested from cocoa trees. The beans are then fermented for several days. After fermentation, the beans are dried in the sun for about a week. Next, the dried beans are packed into bags and transported to the factory."

Body 2: "At the factory, the beans are roasted at high temperature. The roasted beans are then ground into a paste. Finally, the chocolate paste is moulded into bars and packaged for sale."
