IELTS Writing Task 1 — Bar Chart Description Made Simple

How Bar Charts Are Different

Bar charts show comparisons between categories. Unlike line graphs (which show trends over time), bar charts compare groups, countries, or items.

Key difference: Focus on COMPARISONS, not just trends.

Framework for Bar Charts

Step 1: Introduction (1 sentence)

Paraphrase the question.

Original: "The bar chart shows the percentage of people using public transport in five cities."
Paraphrase: "The bar graph compares the proportion of residents who use public transportation in five different cities."

Step 4: Body Paragraph 2 (5-7 sentences)

Describe remaining categories and make comparisons.

Useful Language for Bar Charts

High values:

  • "City A had the highest percentage at 65%."

  • "The most popular option was X, with 70% of respondents."
  • Low values:

  • "City E had the lowest proportion at just 20%."

  • "Only 15% of people chose option D."
  • Comparisons:

  • "City A's usage was nearly double that of City C."

  • "There was a significant gap between the highest and lowest categories."

  • "While X showed strong preference, Y was considerably less popular."
  • Approximate numbers:

  • "approximately" / "roughly" / "about" / "around"

  • "just under" / "just over" / "nearly"

  • "in the region of" / "in excess of"
  • Common Bar Chart Patterns

Pattern 1: One category consistently highest
"The most popular choice remained X throughout the period, consistently exceeding 50%."

    Pattern 2: Categories close together
"The top three cities had similar percentages, ranging from 55% to 65%."

    Pattern 3: One outlier
"While most cities showed usage above 40%, City E stood out with only 20%."
