IELTS Writing Task 2 — Essay Structures That Score Band 7+

Why Structure Matters

In IELTS Writing Task 2, structure accounts for a significant part of your Coherence and Cohesion score. Without clear structure, even good ideas score poorly.

Here are 4 essay structures that work for every Task 2 question type.

Structure 1: Opinion Essay (Agree/Disagree)

Question: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?"

Structure:

  • Introduction — State your opinion (agree, disagree, or partially agree)

  • Body 1 — First reason with example

  • Body 2 — Second reason with example

  • Conclusion — Restate your opinion
  • Example introduction:
"I believe that technology has brought more benefits than drawbacks to education. While there are some concerns about screen time, the advantages of online learning far outweigh the disadvantages."

Structure 2: Discussion Essay (Discuss Both Views)

Question: "Discuss both views and give your own opinion."

    Structure:

  • Introduction — Introduce both views + your opinion

  • Body 1 — View 1 with explanation

  • Body 2 — View 2 with explanation

  • Conclusion — State which view you support
  • Example introduction:
"Some people believe that university education should be free for everyone, while others argue that students should pay for their own education. In my opinion, while free education has merits, some form of contribution is necessary."

    Structure 3: Problem-Solution Essay

Question: "What are the problems? What solutions can you suggest?"

    Structure:

  • Introduction — Introduce the problem

  • Body 1 — Problems (2-3 problems with examples)

  • Body 2 — Solutions (2-3 solutions with examples)

  • Conclusion — Summary
  • Example introduction:
"Traffic congestion in major cities is a growing problem that affects millions of people daily. This essay will discuss the main causes of this issue and propose practical solutions."

    Structure 4: Advantages-Disadvantages Essay

Question: "What are the advantages and disadvantages?"

    Structure:

  • Introduction — Introduce the topic

  • Body 1 — Advantages (2-3 with examples)

  • Body 2 — Disadvantages (2-3 with examples)

  • Conclusion — Summary (optional: which outweighs which)
  • Paragraph Structure (PEEL)

Every body paragraph should follow PEEL:

P — Point: State your main point
E — Explain: Explain why or how
    E — Example: Give a specific example
L — Link: Link back to the question

    Example:
"One major advantage of online learning is flexibility (Point). Students can study at their own pace and choose when to attend classes (Explain). For instance, a working professional can study in the evenings without leaving their job (Example). This flexibility makes education accessible to a wider range of people (Link)."
