What Are Modal Verbs?
Modal verbs express ability, necessity, possibility, or advice. They're essential for both IELTS Writing and Speaking.
Main modals: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would, ought to
Modal Verbs and Their Meanings
- "I can speak English" (present ability)
- "I could speak English when I was young" (past ability)
- "It could rain tomorrow" (possibility)
Can / Could (Ability/Possibility)
- "You must follow the rules" (strong obligation)
- "I have to wake up early" (external obligation)
- "It must be true" (deduction/logical conclusion)
Must / Have to (Necessity/Obligation)
- "You should study every day" (advice)
- "You ought to respect your elders" (advice, slightly more formal)
- "The government should invest in education" (recommendation)
Should / Ought to (Advice)
- "It may rain tomorrow" (possibility — 50%)
- "It might rain tomorrow" (possibility — 30%)
- "You may leave now" (permission)
May / Might (Possibility)
- "Would you help me?" (polite request)
- "I would travel if I had money" (hypothetical)
- "I would like to apply" (polite expression)

Common IELTS Mistakes
- ❌ "You should to study" → ✅ "You should study" (no "to" after modals)
- ❌ "I can to speak English" → ✅ "I can speak English"
- ❌ "Must I go?" → ✅ "Do I have to go?" (for questions about obligation)
- ❌ "He must not at home" → ✅ "He must not be at home" (use base verb)
Using Modals in IELTS
Writing Task 2:
"Governments should invest more in renewable energy to combat climate change."
"Students must develop critical thinking skills to succeed in the modern world."
Speaking Part 3:
"People might find it difficult to adapt to new technologies."
"The government could implement stricter regulations on pollution."
Speaking Part 1:
"I can cook simple meals, but I'm not a great chef."
"I should probably exercise more, but I don't have time."
