IELTS Grammar — Subject-Verb Agreement Rules You Must Know

What Is Subject-Verb Agreement?

The verb must agree with the subject in number:

  • Singular subject → singular verb

  • Plural subject → plural verb
  • This seems simple, but students make errors constantly.

    Basic Rules

Rule 1: Singular subjects take singular verbs

Rule 2: Plural subjects take plural verbs

    Rule 3: "I" always takes "am/have/do"

    Tricky Cases

Collective nouns (team, family, group, government)

    Singular (acting as one unit):
"The team is playing well" (the team as a whole)

    Plural (individual members):
"The team are arguing among themselves" (individual members)

IELTS tip: Use singular — it's safer and more common.

    "Each," "every," "everyone," "someone"

    Always singular:

  • "Each student has a book" (not "Each student have")

  • "Everyone is welcome" (not "Everyone are welcome")

  • "Someone has called you" (not "Someone have called")
  • "Either...or" and "Neither...nor"

The verb agrees with the NEAREST subject:

  • "Either the students or the teacher is responsible" (teacher is singular)

  • "Neither the teacher nor the students are responsible" (students is plural)
  • "There is/are"

Agrees with the noun that follows:

  • "There is a book on the table" (a book = singular)

  • "There are three books on the table" (three books = plural)
  • Uncountable nouns

    Always singular:

  • "The information is correct" (not "The information are")

  • "The advice is helpful" (not "The advice are")
