IELTS Grammar — How to Use Conditional Sentences (If Clauses)

Why Conditionals Matter

Conditional sentences (if clauses) show advanced grammar. Using them correctly in Writing and Speaking immediately signals Band 7+.

The 4 Types of Conditionals

Type 0: General Truths

Structure: If + present simple, present simple Use: Facts and general truths

"If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils."
"The economy grows if there is stability."

Type 1: Real/Possible Future

Structure: If + present simple, will + base verb Use: Real situations in the future

"If I study hard, I will pass the exam."
"If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home."

Type 2: Unreal/Hypothetical Present

Structure: If + past simple, would + base verb Use: Imaginary situations in the present

"If I had more time, I would learn French."
"If I were the Prime Minister, I would invest more in education."

Note: Use "were" (not "was") for all subjects in formal English: "If I were you..."

Type 3: Unreal/Hypothetical Past

Structure: If + past perfect, would have + past participle Use: Imaginary situations in the past

"If I had studied harder, I would have scored Band 8."
"If she had started earlier, she would have finished on time."

Mixed Conditionals

Past condition + present result:
"If I had studied medicine (past), I would be a doctor now (present)."

Present condition + past result:
"If I were braver (present), I would have spoken up yesterday (past)."
