Immigration changes that affect your IELTS score
The reason a student books an IELTS test is a visa requirement, so the requirement changing is the part worth watching. This page pulls Express Entry draw results and UK Immigration Rules changes directly from the official sources and refreshes on its own.
Every figure below is copied from the government source named next to it. Nothing here is interpreted, forecast, or advice.
Last refreshed: 2026-10-08 02:45 UTCThis page is not immigration advice. It lists published facts from official government sources so you can read them in one place. It is not legal advice, not a prediction, and not a substitute for a licensed immigration consultant or a registered adviser who is authorised to advise you.
Rules and cut-offs change without notice. Before you act on anything here, open the official link and read the current version yourself. Step Ahead Institute teaches English. We do not advise on immigration.
Canada: Express Entry draw results
These are the most recent rounds published by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. CRS score of lowest-ranked candidate invited is the figure to read: if your CRS sits above it, you were invited in that round. It moves round to round, which is why it is listed here rather than written once in an article.

Why this matters for your IELTS band score
The band you need is set by the route, not by the test. Two examples from the official guidance linked above:
- Canada's Federal Skilled Worker route asks for CLB 7, which is IELTS 6.0 in each of the four abilities. The lowest band is the one that matters, not the average.
- The UK Student visa route asks for CEFR B2, IELTS 5.5 across four, while most universities ask 6.5 or higher. Those are different numbers for different purposes, and the university requirement is the one you have to meet.
This is also why a repeat attempt usually needs a plan rather than a repetition. If a score is capped by one criterion, repeating the same preparation reproduces it. Our page on the long-haul retakers sets out how that is normally worked out.
Ready to talk about your own score?
A diagnostic across all four skills, timed on a computer, tells you which criterion is actually holding the total down. That is a different conversation from a general course, and it is the first session.
