The IELTS part is the easy part to get wrong
Australians are specific about the test in a way that catches people out, and the specifics are where most applications go wrong.
- The version matters. Undergraduate and postgraduate study normally needs IELTS Academic. General Training is for migration routes. Booking the wrong one means rebooking.
- It must be taken in person. Australia does not accept IELTS Online or any other fully remote or at-home version for visa purposes. The test has to be at a secure test centre.
- The test date has a shelf life. The department accepts results from the three years before your application, so a score that was excellent two years ago and expires before you apply is no use.
- Each component is checked separately. An overall figure is not accepted on its own; a requirement is stated per skill.
After that, the institutions set their own entry requirements on top, and those are usually higher than the visa floor. Both matter and they are not the same number.
What institutions typically ask
| Course level | Common requirement |
|---|---|
| Foundation or pathway | Lower, roughly 5.0-5.5 |
| Undergraduate | Around 6.0-6.5 overall |
| Postgraduate taught | Around 6.5-7.0 overall |
| Some faculties and competitive courses | 7.0 or higher |
Most also set a floor on individual components, commonly nothing below 6.0, and the tighter English requirements apply to fields where you will be assessed in English from the first year: law, medicine, nursing, teaching.
These figures move. Each university publishes its own requirement, several change them between intake years, and a course-by-course check is the only reliable version.
The order things happen in
The sequence matters more than people expect, because two of the steps need your IELTS score first.
- Shortlist courses and check the English requirement for each. Not the university's general requirement, the course's.
- Take IELTS once you know the requirement. One test, used across applications, rather than three.
- Apply and receive offers. Offers are normally conditional on your English score.
- Accept the offer and pay any deposit. Acceptance is what lets you apply for a student visa.
- Gather evidence for the visa, including proof of funds and overseas student health cover.
- Book a medical examination if required, then submit.
- Wait for the decision.
The step people get wrong is the third. You cannot apply for the student visa before you hold an offer, and the offer needs your score. Doing the test after accepting the offer, rather than before applying, adds weeks at the exact point where delays cost you an intake.
The costs, and why not to plan from an internet number
Three things stack up: tuition fees, living costs, and the visa and insurance charges.
Tuition varies enormously by course and institution, from the tens of thousands of Australian dollars a year upwards, and it can rise between the year you apply and the year you enrol. Living costs depend almost entirely on where you study; Sydney and Melbourne are materially more expensive than Adelaide or regional cities, and the visa assesses your funds against a figure set by the department rather than by you.
Both the tuition and the required funds figure change. Any number you read is a snapshot of a particular intake, so treat it as a planning estimate and confirm the current figure with the institution and the department rather than budgeting to something you found in an article.
The honest advice is to build a budget with a margin and then have that conversation with the institution directly.
After you finish
Australia has a post-study work route for graduates, currently the Temporary Graduate visa, which gives a period of work after completing an eligible Australian qualification. The length depends on the qualification, with longer periods for higher degrees, and the conditions are set by the department rather than by your university.
Some study leads to skilled migration through points-tested routes. Those work very differently from the study visa, and the English requirement is the assigned-level system described above rather than an institutional requirement.
Rules on both of these change, and the post-study arrangements are among the parts of this that change most often. Check them when you are close to graduating, not now.
Getting the IELTS score right
The single most common mistake is sitting the test before confirming the exact requirement, and the second is booking Academic when the course accepts either. Both cost a full fee and weeks.
Find out which component is limiting you, and move that one. A 6.0 in Listening caps a candidate who is already at 7.0 everywhere else, and no amount of extra Reading work changes the overall score in that situation.
Practise on a computer. The IELTS on paper test has been discontinued, so the real test will be computer-delivered, and the on-screen task list is easier to manage once you have seen it.
If you would rather have someone mark your writing than write it unsupervised, that is what structured coaching is for. Step Ahead Institute works with small groups in Yamunanagar, and you can come and talk through the requirement before you book anything.
