How to Choose the Right IELTS Test Date (Academic vs General Training)

Academic vs General Training

Before choosing a test date, you need to know which IELTS type to take.

IELTS Academic

For: University admission, professional registration Reading: Academic passages (journal articles, books) Writing Task 1: Describe graphs, charts, processes

IELTS General Training

For: Immigration, work visa, secondary education Reading: Everyday texts (advertisements, newspapers, notices) Writing Task 1: Write a letter (formal or informal)

Speaking and Listening: Same for both types.

How to Choose Your Test Date

Factor 1: Application Deadline
Work backwards from your deadline:

  • University application deadline β†’ Take IELTS 2-3 months before

  • Visa application β†’ Take IELTS 3-4 months before

  • PR application β†’ Take IELTS as soon as you're ready
  • Factor 2: Preparation Time

  • Need 4-6 weeks minimum

  • If scoring Band 5 now and need Band 7, give yourself 8-12 weeks

  • Don't rush β€” a bad score wastes money and time
  • Factor 3: Test Availability

  • Computer-delivered: Available almost daily

  • Paper-based: Usually 2-4 times per month

  • Book early β€” popular dates fill up fast
