IELTS Writing Task 2 — How to Write an Opinion Essay (Agree/Disagree)

What Is an Opinion Essay?

An opinion essay asks: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" You must clearly state your position and support it with reasons and examples.

Essay Structure

Body 1 (5-7 sentences)

First reason why you hold this opinion + specific example

Body 2 (5-7 sentences)

Second reason why you hold this opinion + specific example

How to State Your Opinion

Clear agreement:
"I firmly believe that..." / "I strongly agree that..."

Clear disagreement:
"I disagree with the notion that..." / "I do not believe that..."

Partial agreement:
"While I agree that... , I also believe that..." / "Although there are merits to both sides, I tend to agree that..."

Body Paragraph Example

Question: "Some people believe that university education should be free for all students. To what extent do you agree?"

Body 1:
"One compelling reason for free university education is that it promotes equality. In many countries, students from low-income families cannot afford tuition fees, which limits their access to higher education. For instance, in the United States, student loan debt has reached trillions of dollars, forcing many graduates to take jobs they are overqualified for simply to repay their loans. Free education would remove this financial barrier and allow students to focus on their studies."

Body 2:
"Furthermore, investing in free education benefits society as a whole. When more people have access to university education, the workforce becomes more skilled and productive. This leads to economic growth, lower unemployment rates, and reduced crime. Countries like Germany, which offer free university education, have some of the strongest economies in Europe, demonstrating the long-term benefits of this investment."
