IELTS Writing Task 2 — How to Develop Ideas for Any Topic

The Idea Generation Problem

Many students know the essay structure but struggle to generate ideas. They stare at the question for 5 minutes, panic, and write weak arguments.

Here's a simple brainstorming technique that works for ANY Task 2 topic.

The "WHY + EXAMPLE" Technique

For every essay question, ask yourself:

  • WHY is this a problem/benefit/issue?

  • WHO is affected?

  • WHAT is the result?

  • HOW can it be solved?

  • WHERE does this happen most?
  • This gives you 5 angles to develop ideas from.

    Common Topic Categories

IELTS Task 2 topics fall into 5 categories. Knowing these helps you prepare ideas:

    Brainstorming Template

For any question, spend 2 minutes brainstorming:

    Step 1: What are 2-3 problems/benefits?
Step 2: For each, write 1 reason WHY
Step 3: For each reason, write 1 EXAMPLE

    Example:
Question: "What are the advantages of online education?"

    Brainstorm:

  • Advantage 1: Flexibility — WHY: students can study anytime — EXAMPLE: working professionals

  • Advantage 2: Cost-effective — WHY: no commute, no housing — EXAMPLE: students in rural areas

  • Advantage 3: Access to global resources — WHY: learn from anywhere — EXAMPLE: courses from top universities
  • Now you have 3 strong body paragraphs.

5 Go-To Ideas for Any Topic

Keep these in your mental toolkit:

Most IELTS topics can be discussed from at least 2-3 of these angles.

    Practice

Take 5 random Task 2 questions. For each:

  • Spend 2 minutes brainstorming using the WHY + EXAMPLE technique

  • Write 2-3 ideas with examples

  • Don't write the full essay — just brainstorm
  • This builds your idea generation speed. After 1 week, you'll brainstorm in under 1 minute.
