IELTS Writing Task 1 — How to Write Exactly 150+ Words (Not Too Few, Not Too Many)

The Word Count Problem

IELTS Writing Task 1 requires at least 150 words. Writing fewer costs you marks. But many students either write too little (130-140 words) or too much (200+ words).

Ideal range: 150-180 words

Why 150-180 Is Perfect

How to Hit 150+ Words

Introduction (20-30 words): 1 sentence
Overview (30-40 words): 2 sentences
Body Paragraph 1 (40-50 words): 5-6 sentences with data
Body Paragraph 2 (40-50 words): 5-6 sentences with data

Total: 130-170 words

Words That Count

Do count:

  • Numbers (65% counts as 3 words: "sixty-five percent")

  • Hyphenated words (well-known = 2 words)

  • Compound nouns (car park = 2 words)
  • Don't count:

  • Articles (a, an, the) — wait, they DO count

  • All words count — there are no exceptions
  • Words That Pad (Avoid These)

    Don't pad your writing with:

  • Unnecessary repetition ("In my opinion, I think...")

  • Redundant phrases ("due to the fact that" → "because")

  • Overly long sentences when short ones work
  • Do add value with:

  • Specific data points

  • Comparisons between categories

  • Trend descriptions with time references
  • Quick Word Count Method

    While writing:

  • Introduction: ~25 words ✓

  • Overview: ~35 words ✓

  • Body 1: ~45 words ✓ (count sentences: 6 sentences × ~7 words = ~42)

  • Body 2: ~45 words ✓

  • Total: ~150 words ✓
  • Time-saving tip: Don't count words during the exam. Aim for 4 well-developed paragraphs and you'll naturally hit 150+.

    Practice

Write a Task 1 response and count the words. If under 150, add one more data point or comparison. If over 180, remove unnecessary details.

After 5 practices, you'll naturally write the right amount.
