IELTS Vocabulary — How to Paraphrase Like a Band 8 Student

What Is Paraphrasing?

Paraphrasing means expressing the same idea using different words and structures. It's essential for:

  • Writing Task 1 (paraphrase the question)

  • Writing Task 2 (avoid repeating words)

  • Reading (understand synonyms in passages)

  • Speaking (show vocabulary range)
  • Types of Paraphrasing

    1. Synonym Replacement

    Original: "Technology has improved education." Paraphrase: "Technology has enhanced learning."

    2. Structure Change

    Original: "Because it rained, we stayed inside." Paraphrase: "We remained indoors due to the rain."

    3. Active to Passive (or Vice Versa)

    Original: "Scientists discovered a new species." Paraphrase: "A new species was discovered by scientists."

    4. Word Form Change

    Original: "The company's rapid growth surprised everyone." Paraphrase: "The company grew rapidly, surprising everyone."

    5. Clause Rearrangement

    Original: "Although the weather was bad, we went out." Paraphrase: "We went out despite the bad weather."
