IELTS Speaking — How to Score Band 7+ in Pronunciation

What Band 7 Pronunciation Means

Band 7 in pronunciation means:

  • You can be understood without difficulty

  • You use a range of pronunciation features

  • You use stress and intonation appropriately

  • You make only occasional pronunciation errors
  • Important: You don't need a British or American accent. You need CLEAR pronunciation.

    The 4 Pillars of Pronunciation

    Pillar 1: Individual Sounds

Focus on sounds that Hindi speakers often struggle with:

    Vowel sounds:

  • /iː/ (sheep) vs /ɪ/ (ship) — length difference

  • /e/ (bed) vs /æ/ (bad) — mouth opening

  • /ʌ/ (cut) vs /ɑː/ (car) — tongue position
  • Consonant sounds:

  • /θ/ (think) and /ð/ (that) — tongue between teeth

  • /w/ (we) and /v/ (very) — lip shape

  • /r/ (red) — tongue doesn't touch roof
  • Pillar 2: Word Stress

    Stress changes meaning:

    Noun vs Verb:

  • PREsent (noun) = gift

  • preSENT (verb) = to show
  • Common stress patterns:

  • 2-syllable nouns: stress on FIRST syllable (TA-ble, STU-dent)

  • 2-syllable verbs: stress on SECOND syllABLE (pre-SENT, re-CORD)
  • Pillar 3: Sentence Stress

Content words are stressed, function words are not.

Content words (stressed): nouns, main verbs, adjectives, adverbs
Function words (unstressed): articles, prepositions, pronouns, auxiliary verbs

Example: "I WANT to GO to the CITY centre"
    (stressed words: WANT, GO, CITY)

    Pillar 4: Intonation

    Rising intonation (going up):

  • Yes/No questions: "Do you like cooking?" ↗

  • Showing uncertainty: "I think so?" ↗
  • Falling intonation (going down):

  • Statements: "I enjoy cooking." ↘

  • WH- questions: "What do you do?" ↘

  • Showing confidence: "Definitely." ↘
  • Common pattern:
Start high → go down → end low (for statements)
Start low → go up → end high (for yes/no questions)
