Why Vocabulary Matters

Vocabulary accounts for 25% of your IELTS Speaking score. Using Band 7+ vocabulary shows the examiner you have a wide range of words — not just basic ones.

Everyday Words → Band 7 Alternatives

Good → Better:

  • "important" → "significant", "crucial", "vital"

  • "happy" → "delighted", "thrilled", "content"

  • "bad" → "detrimental", "adverse", "unfavorable"

  • "big" → "substantial", "considerable", "enormous"

  • "think" → "believe", "consider", "reckon"
  • Very → Much better alternatives:

  • "very good" → "excellent", "outstanding", "remarkable"

  • "very bad" → "terrible", "dreadful", "atrocious"

  • "very important" → "essential", "paramount", "indispensable"

  • "very interesting" → "fascinating", "captivating", "intriguing"
  • Useful Speaking Phrases

    Giving opinions:

  • "From my perspective..."

  • "As I see it..."

  • "I'm inclined to believe that..."

  • "It seems to me that..."
  • Adding detail:

  • "What I mean is..."

  • "To elaborate on that..."

  • "The reason I say this is..."

  • "This is mainly because..."
  • Giving examples:

  • "To give you an example..."

  • "A case in point is..."

  • "Take... for instance"
  • Showing contrast:

  • "Having said that..."

  • "On the flip side..."

    How to Learn New Vocabulary

    The 3-step method:

  • Learn 3 new words daily

  • Use each word in 2 different sentences (out loud)

  • Use them in conversation the same day
  • Don't: Memorize 50 words at once. You'll forget them all.
    Do: Learn 3 words deeply (understand meaning, pronunciation, collocations).

    Practice

    Daily routine (10 minutes):

  • Learn 3 new words with their pronunciation

  • Make 2 sentences with each word

  • Answer an IELTS question using the new words
