IELTS Speaking — How to Score Band 8+ (Advanced Tips)

What Band 8 Means

Band 8 in IELTS Speaking means:

  • Speaks fluently with only rare repetition or self-correction

  • Uses vocabulary with full flexibility and precision

  • Uses a wide range of structures with accuracy

  • Pronunciation is clear and easy to understand throughout
  • Here are the advanced strategies to get there.

    Strategy 1: Develop Extended Answers

Band 8 speakers don't just answer the question — they develop their answer fully.

Band 6: "I like reading because it helps me learn new things."
Band 8: "I'm quite passionate about reading, actually. I find that it not only broadens my knowledge but also improves my vocabulary and critical thinking skills. For instance, I recently read a book about behavioural economics that completely changed my perspective on decision-making."

Key difference: Band 8 adds depth, examples, and personal reflection.

Strategy 2: Use Less Common Vocabulary Naturally

Band 7: "Technology has made life easier."
Band 8: "Technology has revolutionised the way we live — from online banking to telemedicine, it's become indispensable in our daily routines."

Note: "Indispensable" is used naturally, not forced.

    Strategy 3: Show Grammatical Range

Band 8 speakers mix structures naturally:

    Conditionals:
"If I had more time, I would definitely learn a third language."

    Passive:
"The decision was made by the committee after careful consideration."

    Relative clauses:
"My mentor, who has 20 years of experience, always encourages me to push my limits."

    Cleft sentences:
"What I find most fascinating is how technology has changed education."

    Strategy 4: Self-Correct Gracefully

Band 8 speakers self-correct WITHOUT long pauses:

Band 6: "I went to... I mean, I go to university every day."
Band 8: "I go to university — well, I should say I used to go daily, but now it's only three times a week."

    Strategy 5: Use Discourse Markers

Discourse markers show natural spoken English:

Use 2-3 per speaking test. Too many sounds unnatural.

Strategy 6: Develop Opinions with Nuance

Band 6: "I agree with this."
Band 8: "I largely agree, although I'd add the caveat that it depends on the context. In urban areas, for example, this might not apply in the same way."

Band 8 speakers: Show nuance, consider different perspectives, and develop thoughtful opinions.
