IELTS Listening Section 3 and 4 — How to Handle Academic Conversations

Why Sections 3 and 4 Are Difficult

Most students score well in Sections 1 and 2 but lose marks in Sections 3 and 4. The reason is simple — these sections use academic vocabulary, multiple speakers, and faster speech.

Section 3: 2-4 speakers discussing an academic topic (usually a tutor and students)
Section 4: A monologue — a lecture or academic talk on one topic

Here's how to master both.

Section 3: Multi-Speaker Academic Discussion

Common scenarios:

  • Students discussing a group project

  • A tutor giving feedback on an assignment

  • Students choosing research topics

  • A supervisor explaining methodology
  • Challenge: Multiple speakers talking at once, interrupting, and disagreeing.

    Strategy 1: Identify Speakers Quickly
In the first 30 seconds, figure out:

  • How many speakers are there?

  • Who is the tutor/professor?

  • Who are the students?

  • What's the topic?
  • Strategy 2: Listen for Opinions
Section 3 often asks about opinions:

  • "What does the tutor think about...?"

  • "Which student disagrees with...?"
  • Key phrases:

  • "I believe that..." / "In my opinion..."

  • "I'm not sure about that" / "I disagree"

  • "That's a good point, but..."
  • Strategy 3: Track Changes
    Speakers often change their minds:

  • "Actually, I've changed my mind..."

  • "On second thought, maybe we should..."
  • Section 4: Academic Lecture

    Common scenarios:

  • A professor lecturing on a topic

  • A researcher presenting findings

  • An expert discussing a process or theory
  • Challenge: One speaker, continuous flow, no pauses, academic vocabulary.

Strategy 1: Pre-read Questions Before Audio
You get time before Section 4 starts. Use it:

  • Read all questions first

  • Underline keywords

  • Predict the answer type (number, name, word)
  • Strategy 2: Follow the Structure
    Academic lectures follow patterns:

  • Introduction → topic overview

  • Main points → 2-3 key ideas

  • Examples → supporting evidence

  • Conclusion → summary
  • Listen for:

  • "Today I'll talk about..." (introduction)

  • "First, let me explain..." (main point 1)

  • "For example..." (example)

  • "To summarize..." (conclusion)
  • Strategy 3: Write While Listening
Section 4 often has 10 questions in a row with no pause. Write your answer IMMEDIATELY — don't wait for a pause that never comes.

Strategy 4: Don't Panic If You Miss One
Section 4 is linear. If you miss question 5, immediately focus on question 6. Dwelling on a missed answer means losing 2-3 more.
