IELTS Listening Practice — How to Improve from Band 5 to Band 7

Moving from Band 5 to Band 7 in Listening

If you are currently scoring Band 5 in IELTS Listening, do not worry. Band 7 is absolutely achievable with the right approach.

Understanding the Gap

Band 5 means: You understand the general idea but miss specific details. You might get 16-17 out of 40 questions right.

Band 7 means: You catch most details, understand different accents, and can follow academic discussions. You need 30-32 out of 40 questions right.

That's about 13-15 more correct answers. Here's exactly how to get there.

Week 1 and 2: Build Your Foundation

Daily tasks:

  • Listen to 1 BBC podcast (5 minutes) starting with slow speed

  • Write down 3 new words from each podcast

  • Practice spelling: accommodation, environment, necessary, restaurant

  • Do 1 Listening Section 1 on ielts.bharatdn.com
  • Key focus: Numbers, dates, spelling, single word answers.

    Spelling mistakes that cost marks:

  • "Febuary" instead of "February"

  • "Wenesday" instead of "Wednesday"

  • "address" (double d)

  • "accommodation" (double c and double m)

  • "environment" (not "enviroment")
  • Practice: Write 10 tricky words 5 times each. This fixes 80% of spelling errors.

Week 3 and 4: Build Speed and Accuracy

    Daily tasks:

  • Do 1 full Listening test on ielts.bharatdn.com

  • Review every wrong answer — understand WHY it was wrong

  • Practice dictation: listen, pause, write, check

  • Listen to podcasts at normal speed
  • Key focus: Sections 2 and 3, signpost words, paraphrasing.

    Paraphrasing exercise:
IELTS often paraphrases the question. Learn to recognize:

  • "affordable" = "cheap" / "inexpensive"

  • "residents" = "people living in the area"

  • "purchased" = "bought"

  • "commenced" = "started" / "began"

  • "subsequently" = "later" / "after that"
  • Week 5 and 6: Exam Simulation

    Daily tasks:

  • Full Listening test under exam conditions

  • Focus on Section 3 and 4

  • Time yourself strictly

  • Review wrong answers immediately after
  • Simulate real exam conditions:

  • Use headphones (not speakers)

  • No pausing the audio

  • Write answers directly (not on scratch paper first)

  • Check answers only after the test is complete
  • Common Band 5 Mistakes

    Daily Practice Routine

    Total: 40 minutes daily

With consistent practice, you will reach Band 7 in 6 weeks. The key is consistency — practice every single day, even if it's just 20 minutes.
