IELTS Listening — How to Handle Different Accents (British, American, Australian)

Why Accents Matter in IELTS

IELTS Listening tests use a mix of British, American, and Australian accents. If you only practice with one accent, you'll struggle when you hear an unfamiliar one on exam day.

The good news? All three accents share the same grammar and vocabulary. The differences are mainly in pronunciation. Once you know what to listen for, accents become easy.

British Accent: Key Features

Common pronunciation differences:

  • "bath" sounds like "bahth" (long "a" sound)

  • "car" drops the "r" sound: "cah" not "carr"

  • "water" sounds like "waw-tuh"

  • "better" sounds like "beh-tuh" (t becomes soft)
  • British words you might hear:

  • "flat" (apartment)

  • "post" (mail)

  • "lift" (elevator)

  • "chemists" (pharmacy)

  • "brilliant" (great)
  • American Accent: Key Features

    Common pronunciation differences:

  • "r" is always pronounced: "car" sounds like "carr"

  • "t" in the middle becomes "d": "water" sounds like "wader"

  • "can't" sounds like "cant" (not "cahnt")

  • "schedule" sounds like "sked-ule" (British: "shed-ule")
  • American words you might hear:

  • "apartment" (not "flat")

  • "elevator" (not "lift")

  • "gas" (not "petrol")

  • "fall" (not "autumn")

  • "apologize" (not "apologise")
  • Australian Accent: Key Features

    Common pronunciation differences:

  • "day" sounds like "die"

  • "no" sounds like "naur"

  • "mate" is commonly used (friend)

  • Rising intonation at the end of statements (sounds like a question)
  • Australian words you might hear:

  • "arvo" (afternoon)

  • "barbie" (barbecue)

  • "brekkie" (breakfast)

  • "uni" (university)

  • "G'day" (hello)

  • Both mean the same — don't let the pronunciation confuse you.
