IELTS Listening — How to Use Prediction to Get More Answers Right

What Is Prediction in IELTS Listening?

Prediction means guessing what kind of answer the question needs BEFORE the audio plays. It's the #1 technique used by Band 8+ scorers.

When you predict, your brain is actively searching for specific information instead of passively listening to everything. This makes you faster, more accurate, and less likely to miss answers.

How to Predict: Step by Step

Step 1: Read the Question

Look at the question carefully. What is it asking?

Example: "How much does the course cost?"
→ The answer is definitely a NUMBER (price).

Example: "What is the name of the speaker's hometown?"
→ The answer is a PROPER NOUN (place name).

Step 2: Look at the Question Type

Fill in the blanks:

  • Read the sentence around the blank

  • What word type fits? (noun, verb, adjective, number)

  • How many words? (usually 1-2)
  • Multiple choice:

  • Read all options first

  • Note the differences between options

  • The audio will mention all options — only one is correct
  • Matching:

  • Read the instructions carefully

  • Understand what you're matching (features to descriptions, speakers to opinions)
  • Step 3: Predict the Answer Type

    Common answer types:

  • Numbers: prices, dates, phone numbers, quantities

  • Names: people, places, institutions

  • Objects: things, services, facilities

  • Activities: verbs, actions

  • Descriptions: adjectives, characteristics
  • Step 4: Underline Keywords

Keywords help you follow the audio:

  • Nouns are best keywords (they're rarely paraphrased)

  • Avoid verbs and adjectives as keywords (they change easily)
  • Example:
Question: "What sport does the speaker play every weekend?"
Keywords: SPORT, WEEKEND (not "play" — too common)

    Prediction in Action

Question: "What time does the library close on Saturday?"

    Before audio:

  • Answer type: TIME (number)

  • Keywords: LIBRARY, SATURDAY, CLOSE

  • Prediction: A time format (e.g., "5:30", "6 PM")
  • During audio:
"I usually visit the library on Saturdays. It opens at 9 AM and closes at 5:30 PM, but on Sundays it's only open until 1 PM."

    Answer: 5:30 PM

Without prediction, you might hear "9 AM" and write that down. With prediction, you're listening specifically for CLOSING time on SATURDAY.

    Common Prediction Mistakes
