Two different scoring systems in one certificate
The single most common misunderstanding about IELTS is that it works like a school test. It does not. Two of the four skills are scored by counting correct answers, and two are scored by an examiner against published criteria. Treating all four the same is why candidates are surprised by the result.
| Skill | How it is scored |
|---|---|
| Listening | 40 questions, one mark each, converted to a band |
| Reading | 40 questions, one mark each, converted to a band |
| Writing | Examiner scores four criteria, averaged |
| Speaking | Examiner scores four criteria, averaged |
The overall band
Your overall band is the average of the four skill bands, rounded to the nearest half band.
Worked examples:
| L | R | W | S | Average | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7.0 | 6.5 | 6.0 | 7.0 | 6.625 | 7.0 |
| 6.5 | 6.5 | 5.0 | 7.0 | 6.25 | 6.5 |
| 6.5 | 6.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.125 | 6.0 |
| 4.0 | 4.5 | 4.0 | 3.0 | 3.875 | 4.0 |
The rounding rule: if the average ends in .25 it rounds up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75 it rounds up to the next whole band. An average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, and an average of 6.75 becomes 7.0.
Note the consequence in the second row: Writing 5.0 did not cap the overall at 6.25, it pushed the average up to 6.5. And in the first, an average of 6.625 rounds to 7.0, not 6.5. Averages in the upper half of a quarter band round up more often than candidates expect.
Listening: marks to band
Forty questions, one mark each. The published figures are averages rather than fixed cut-offs, and the exact marks needed vary slightly between test versions, so treat these as the guide they are meant to be.
| Average marks out of 40 | Band |
|---|---|
| 39-40 | 9.0 |
| around 37-38 | 8.5 |
| around 35-36 | 8.0 |
| around 32-34 | 7.5 |
| around 30-31 | 7.0 |
| around 26-29 | 6.5 |
| around 23-25 | 6.0 |
| around 18-22 | 5.5 |
| around 16-17 | 5.0 |
Reading: same scale, different averages
Academic Reading also runs to 40 marks, and the averages sit slightly lower at the lower bands:
| Average marks out of 40 | Academic band |
|---|---|
| 39-40 | 9.0 |
| 35-36 | 8.0 |
| around 33-34 | 7.5 |
| around 30-32 | 7.0 |
| around 27-29 | 6.5 |
| around 23-26 | 6.0 |
| around 19-22 | 5.5 |
| around 15-18 | 5.0 |
Academic and General Training Reading use the same conversion scale. The tests are not interchangeable in content, but a given mark converts to the same band in both. What differs is that General Training passages are easier, so candidates typically need more correct answers to land on a given band. It is not graded more leniently; the same marks produce the same band.
Writing and Speaking
Both are scored by an examiner against four criteria, weighted equally, and the skill band is the average of those four.
Writing: task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy.
Speaking: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, pronunciation.
Two consequences worth internalising:
You do not need the target band in all four criteria. A Writing 7.0 can come from 7, 7, 7 and 6.5. Conversely a Writing 6.0 can come from 7, 6, 6 and 5, and the weak criterion is what you work on.
Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1 in Writing. The two tasks are assessed independently, but Task 2 is weighted more heavily in the overall Writing score. A strong Task 1 does not rescue a weak Task 2.
Turning a target into a plan
To reach an overall 7.0 you need the four skills to average 6.75 or better before rounding. Working backwards from the tables above:
- Listening at 7.0 needs roughly 30 correct
- Academic Reading at 7.0 needs roughly 30 correct
- Writing at 7.0 means about a 7 across the criteria on average
- Speaking at 7.0 means about a 7 across the criteria on average
Note what that permits: Writing 6.5 with Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0 and Speaking 6.5 still averages 6.875 and comes out at 7.0. You do not need 7.0 everywhere to hold an overall 7.0, and chasing 7.0 in a skill you already have wastes study time that belongs in your weakest one.
Why self-estimation is unreliable
Candidates consistently overestimate Writing and Speaking relative to Listening and Reading, because the first two feel more knowable. Listening and Reading are objectively counted, so there is nothing to guess.
Take a real mock, under time, on a computer, and use the marks you actually scored rather than a sense of how it went. The IELTS Practice Portal runs computer-delivered tests with a band calculator built in.
One last thing
An overall band is an average, and averages hide the weak skill. Almost every institution, and every immigration authority, checks individual components as well as the overall figure. A 7.5 overall built on a 5.5 in one skill is a weaker application than a 7.0 with nothing below 6.5, and in several cases it fails the requirement outright.
