IELTS Exam Overview

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) tests your English skills in 4 sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Total test time: 2 hours 45 minutes (Listening, Reading, Writing)
Speaking: May be on the same day or within 7 days

Section 1: Listening (30 minutes)

Format:

  • 4 sections

  • 40 questions total

  • Each section gets harder
  • Section 1: Everyday conversation (2 speakers)
    Section 2: Everyday situation (1 speaker)
    Section 3: Academic discussion (2-4 speakers)
    Section 4: Academic lecture (1 speaker)

    Question types:

  • Multiple choice

  • Fill in the blanks

  • Matching

  • Plan/map labeling

  • Form completion
  • Timing: 30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time (paper-based)

    Section 2: Reading (60 minutes)

    Academic:

  • 3 long passages

  • 40 questions total

  • Passages from books, journals, magazines
  • General Training:

  • 5-6 short passages

  • 40 questions total

  • Passages from advertisements, newspapers, guides
  • Question types:

  • True/False/Not Given

  • Yes/No/Not Given

  • Matching headings

  • Multiple choice

  • Summary completion

  • Sentence completion
  • Timing: 60 minutes (no extra transfer time)

    Section 3: Writing (60 minutes)

    Academic Task 1: Describe a graph, chart, process (150+ words)
    General Training Task 1: Write a letter (150+ words)
    Task 2: Essay (250+ words) — same for both

    Essay types:

  • Opinion (agree/disagree)

  • Discussion (both views)

  • Problem-solution

  • Advantages-disadvantages
  • Timing: 20 minutes for Task 1, 40 minutes for Task 2

    Section 4: Speaking (11-14 minutes)

    Part 1: Introduction and interview (4-5 minutes)

  • Everyday questions about home, work, hobbies
  • Part 2: Long turn (3-4 minutes)

  • Cue card, 1 minute preparation, 2 minutes speaking
  • Part 3: Discussion (4-5 minutes)

  • Abstract questions related to Part 2 topic
  • Computer-Delivered vs Paper-Based
