The 10 Words Per Week Plan
Most students try to learn 50 words at once and forget them all. The smart approach is to learn 10 words per week — deeply, not superficially.
The Weekly Schedule
Monday: Learn 10 New Words
Pick 10 words from a topic list. For each word, write:
Example:
Word: "Substantial"
Meaning: large in size, value, or importance
Part of speech: adjective
Sentence: "There has been a substantial improvement in my English."
Synonym: significant
Tuesday: Practice Sentences
Write 3 sentences for each of the 10 words. Use each word in a different context.
Wednesday: Speaking Practice
Answer 5 IELTS Speaking questions, using at least 3 of the new words. Record yourself.
Thursday: Writing Practice
Write a short paragraph (100 words) about any topic using at least 5 of the new words.
Friday: Review and Test
Test yourself: write the meaning of each word from memory. Check which ones you forgot and review them.
Saturday: Use in Conversation
Use at least 5 of the new words in real conversations (with friends, family, or in practice).
Sunday: Review All Words
Review all 10 words one more time. If you can remember them, move to new words next Monday.
Topic Rotation
Week 1: Education
Week 2: Technology
Week 3: Environment
Week 4: Health
Week 5: Society
Week 6: Travel and Transport
Week 7: Culture and Tradition
Week 8: Review all words
Retention Tips
- Use the word 3 times on the day you learn it — this is the #1 retention strategy
- Learn in context — never learn a word in isolation
- Review before sleep — your brain consolidates memories during sleep
- Teach someone else — explaining a word to someone helps you remember it
- Use it or lose it — if you don't use a word in a week, review it
Track Your Progress
After 8 weeks, you'll know 80 new words. After 16 weeks, 160 words. That's enough for Band 7+ vocabulary.
