IELTS Speaking — How to Pronounce English Words Correctly

Why Pronunciation Matters

Pronunciation is 25% of your IELTS Speaking score. But it's not about having a British or American accent — it's about being clear and understandable.

Examiners want to hear:

  • Individual sounds (vowels and consonants)

  • Word stress (which syllable is stressed)

  • Sentence stress (which words are emphasized)

  • Intonation (rising and falling pitch)
  • The 10 Most Common Pronunciation Mistakes (Hindi Speakers)

    1. V vs W

Wrong: "voman" for "woman" Right: "woman" (w sound — lips rounded, no teeth)

    2. Th Sound

Wrong: "tree" for "three", "dat" for "that" Right: "three" (tongue between teeth), "that" (tongue between teeth)

    3. Short vs Long Vowels

Wrong: "sheep" sounds like "ship" Right: "sheep" (long ee), "ship" (short i)

    4. Word Stress

Wrong: "preSENT" for "PREsent" Right: PREsent (noun) = gift, preSENT (verb) = to show

    5. Final Consonants

Wrong: Dropping final consonants ("goo" for "good") Right: Pronounce the final consonant clearly

    6. The Schwa Sound

Wrong: Pronouncing every vowel fully Right: Unstressed vowels become "uh" sound (schwa) "banana" = buh-NA-nuh (not ba-na-na)

    7. R Sound

Wrong: Rolling the R Right: In English, R is smoother (not rolled like Hindi)

    8. L vs R

Wrong: Confusing "light" and "right" Right: L = tongue touches roof of mouth, R = tongue doesn't touch

    9. Consonant Clusters

Wrong: "stud-ee" for "study" Right: "study" (two consonants together: st)

    10. Intonation

Wrong: Flat intonation (robotic) Right: Rising intonation for questions, falling for statements
