The Fear of the 2-Minute Monologue
IELTS Speaking Part 2 is where many students freeze. You get a cue card, 1 minute to prepare, and then you must speak for up to 2 minutes.
But here's the secret: with the right structure, 2 minutes is actually not enough time to say everything you want.
The PPF Method (Past-Present-Future)
This is the most reliable structure for Part 2. It gives you a clear roadmap so you never run out of things to say.
Past: Talk about how it started or your first experience
Present: Explain what happens now or how you feel currently
Future: Share your plans or hopes
Example Cue Card: Describe a skill you want to learn
Past: "I've always been fascinated by photography since I was a child. My father had an old film camera, and I used to watch him take photos of family events. I always wanted to learn how to capture those perfect moments."
Present: "Right now, I use my phone camera for everyday photos, but I want to learn professional techniques like portrait photography, landscape composition, and editing. I spend about 30 minutes daily watching tutorials, but I know I need hands-on practice."
Future: "I plan to join a photography course next month. My goal is to start a photography blog and eventually offer freelance photography services. I believe this skill will also help me in my career."
How to Use Your 1-Minute Preparation Time
You get 1 minute to prepare before speaking. Use it wisely.
Minute breakdown:
What to write down:
What to Do During the 2 Minutes
- Start strong: Don't say "Um, let me think..." — jump straight into your answer
- Keep talking: If you pause for more than 3 seconds, the examiner notices
- Add feelings: "What really excites me is..." or "I feel grateful because..."
- Use examples: "For instance, last month I..."
- Don't worry about finishing: If the examiner stops you at 2 minutes, that's actually good — it means you were speaking enough
Common Mistakes
- Memorizing answers: Examiners can spot memorized responses instantly
- Speaking too fast: Slow down. Clarity matters more than speed
- Not using the full 2 minutes: Keep talking until the examiner stops you
- Panicking during pauses: Say "Let me think for a moment..." and use your keywords
Practice Tip

Practice daily and you'll notice massive improvement in 2-3 weeks.
