IELTS Reading Matching Headings — Strategy and Practice Tips

Why Matching Headings Is Difficult

Matching Headings asks you to match a list of headings (i-i, ii-iv, etc.) to paragraphs in the passage. It's difficult because:

  • There are more headings than paragraphs (extra options)

  • Headings often use similar vocabulary

  • You need to understand the MAIN IDEA of each paragraph
  • Step-by-Step Strategy

Step 1: Read All Headings First (1 minute)

Before looking at the passage, read all headings. Understand what each one means.

    Common heading types:

  • Main idea: "The impact of technology on education"

  • Specific detail: "How students use smartphones"

  • Process: "Steps in the research methodology"

  • Comparison: "Advantages and disadvantages of online learning"
  • Step 2: Read the First Paragraph (1-2 minutes)

Read the entire first paragraph carefully. Understand its main idea.

Ask yourself: "What is this paragraph mainly about?"
Not: "What details does it contain?"

Step 3: Match with a Heading

Look at the heading list. Which one captures the MAIN idea of the paragraph?

    Example:
Paragraph talks about how online learning has grown during COVID-19, with statistics about enrollment increases.
Best match: "The growth of online education during the pandemic"

Not: "Statistics about student enrollment" (too specific — that's just one detail)

Step 4: Cross Out Used Headings

Once you match a heading, cross it out. This reduces options for remaining paragraphs.

Step 5: Repeat for Each Paragraph

Continue reading paragraphs one by one and matching headings.

    Common Mistakes

    Practice Technique

    Daily practice (10 minutes):

  • Take any article (newspaper, magazine)

  • Write a one-sentence summary of each paragraph

  • Compare your summaries with the article's subheadings

  • Check: Did you capture the main idea or just a detail?
  • After 2-3 weeks, you'll match headings accurately and quickly.
