How to Use Articles (A, An, The) Correctly in IELTS

Why Articles Are the #1 Mistake

Hindi doesn't have articles (a, an, the), so Hindi speakers constantly struggle with them. In IELTS, article errors are the most common grammar mistake β€” and they cost you marks in both Writing and Speaking.

Here are the simple rules to use articles correctly.

Rule 1: Use "A" or "An" Before Singular Countable Nouns

Use "a" before consonant sounds:

  • a book, a university, a European country

  • "University" starts with "yu" sound β†’ a university
  • Use "An" before vowel sounds:

  • an apple, an hour, an honest person

  • "Hour" starts with "ow" sound β†’ an hour
  • Remember: It's about SOUND, not spelling.

Rule 2: Use "The" for Specific Things

When both speaker and listener know what you're referring to:

  • "The book on the table" (specific book)

  • "The teacher who teaches me" (specific teacher)
  • When something is unique:

  • The sun, the moon, the internet, the government
  • When you've already mentioned it:

  • "I saw a dog. The dog was brown." (first: a, second: the)
  • Rule 3: No Article for General Plural/Uncountable Nouns

When talking about things in general:

  • "Dogs are loyal animals" (dogs in general, not specific dogs)

  • "Water is essential for life" (water in general)

  • "Education is important" (education in general)
  • Common mistake:

  • ❌ "The education is important"

  • βœ… "Education is important"
  • Rule 4: No Article for Most Proper Nouns

    Exceptions (use "the"):

  • The United States, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands

  • The Himalayas, The Ganges
  • Quick Decision Guide

Is it singular and countable? β†’ Use a/an or the
Is it plural or uncountable in general? β†’ No article
Is it specific (both know which one)? β†’ Use the
Is it unique (sun, moon, internet)? β†’ Use the
